J Initiative (JI) is a grass roots youth and family focused, non-religious, non-governmental organization dedicated to raising awareness and addressing issues that negatively affect families especially women and children.
J Initiative’s approach to child literacy-JI LITERACY DRIVE PROGRAMME take into cognizance the following; Literacy is continually evolving, beginning at birth, through interactions with others and the environment in which a child lives. While the sequence of literacy development follows the same general pattern, individual rates of growth may vary. The process of literacy development begins before elementary school. A child’s very early experiences set the stage for the development of literacy. Learning to read and write is critical to a child’s success in school and later in life. It is the foundation for almost all areas of a child’s development. Reading and writing are interrelated and develop concurrently. Literacy develops in everyday activities and so we encourage the play-based learning.
Similarly JI has embarks on a Digital Literacy Programme with a special focus on Child Online Protection-COP because we believe that when used properly the internet is a wonderfully positive tool for children and young people. As part of the program we strive to take a balanced approach, making sure that we promote the positive opportunities, as well as responding to the risks and equipping children and young people to deal with them. Our work is to ensure that young people are able to use new technology safely and responsibly whenever and wherever they use the internet. They need to be able to look after themselves, their peers and play a part in the wider community and in essence be good digital citizens. Protecting your children from harm is just as important online as it is in the real world. As parent, young people themselves, educators, care giver or guardian,Internet Service Providers(ISPs),Telecommunication companies, policy makers you have an important role to play in helping children and young people to have safe and positive experiences online. The internet offers an exciting world of experiences for children and the family as a whole. It can be educational, entertaining and rewarding.
JI believes that Menstrual Hygiene Management is a suitable way for girls to cope with their monthly periods hygienically. JI’s HAPPY SCHOOL GIRL PROJECT focuses on the ways a girl can keep clean and healthy during menstruation with respect to how they get hold of, use and dispose of materials used for blood absorption such as disposable sanitary pads, reusable sanitary pads or a menstrual cup. Maintaining good hygiene during menstruation is important for a girl’s well-being, freedom of movement, and dignity.
At the core of all these is a child focused research which guide whatever programme we develop for young people.
